THE BREAST AND ARMS OF SILVER
1. What was below the head of gold? What kingdom was represented by this part of the image?
Daniel 2:32, middle part, 39, first part …his breast and his arms of silver,… 39And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee…
“The succeeding kingdom, Medo-Persia, answered to the breast and arms of silver of the great image. It was to be inferior to the preceding king- dom.” –Uriah Smith, The Prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation, p. 51.
2. What other prophets foretold the destruction of Babylon and the rise of a new world power?
Isaiah 13:17, 18 Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. 18 Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eyes shall not spare children.
Jeremiah 51:11 Make bright the ar- rows; gather the shields: the Lord hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of his tem- ple.
“Instead of being a protector of men, Babylon became a proud and cru- el oppressor. The words of Inspiration picturing the cruelty and greed of rulers in Israel reveal the secret of Babylon’s fall and of the fall of many another kingdom since the world began ….” –Education, p. 176.

3. What did the Lord call the conqueror of the Babylonian world empire?
Isaiah 44:28; 45:1 That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foun- dation shall be laid. 45:1 Thus saith the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;
“More than a century before the birth of Cyrus, Inspiration had mentioned him by name, and had caused a record to be made of the actual work he should do in taking the city of Babylon unawares, and in preparing the way for the release of the children of the captivity. Through Isaiah the word had been spoken: “’Thus saith the Lord to His anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him;… to open before him the two-leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: and I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the Lord, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.’ Isaiah 45:1-3.” –Prophets and Kings, p. 551.
4. When did Cyrus give the Jews permission to return to their land? Did all the captives take advantage of this opportunity?
Jeremiah 25:12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accom- plished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the Lord, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.
Ezra 1:1-4; 2:1, 64 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclama- tion throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The Lord God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.3 Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the Lord God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jeru- salem. 4 And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offer- ing for the house of God that is in Je- rusalem. 2:1 Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city; 64 The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore.
“As the king saw the words foretelling, more than a hundred years be- fore his birth, the manner in which Babylon should be taken; as he read the message addressed to him by the Ruler of the universe,… his heart was profoundly moved,’ and he determined to fulfill his divinely appoint- ed mission. Isaiah 45:5, 6, 4, 13. He would let the Judean captives go free; he would help them restore the temple of Jehovah.” –Prophets and Kings, pp. 557, 558. This command was given in 736 B.C.
“These, however, in comparison with the hundreds of thousands scat- tered through the provinces of Medo-Persia, were but a mere remnant. The great majority of the Israelites had chosen to remain in the land of their exile, rather than undergo the hardships of the return journey and the reestablishment of their desolated cities and homes.” –Prophets and Kings, p. 598.
DISCERNMENT OF WHAT IS HELP AND WHAT IS NOT
5. Who offered their help to the weak people of God in rebuilding the city and temple? Was this seemingly well-meant offer accepted?
Ezra 4:1-3 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel; 2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither. 3 But Zerubbabel, and Je- shua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the Lord God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Per- sia hath commanded us.
“Only a remnant had chosen to return from Babylon; and now, as they undertake a work seemingly beyond the strength, their nearest neighbors come with an offer of help. The Samaritans refer to their worship of the true God, and express a desire to share the privileges and blessings connected with the temple service.” –Prophets and Kings, p. 568.
6. Why could the leaders of the people not accept this offer? How was the true character of these pretenders revealed?
Deuteronomy 14:2 For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God, and the Lord hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.
Ezra 4:4, 5 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,5 And hired coun- sellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
“But had the Jewish leaders accepted this offer of assistance, they would have opened a door for the entrance of idolatry. They discerned the insincerity of the Samaritans. They realized that help gained through an alliance with these men would be as nothing in comparison with the blessing they might expect to receive by following the plain commands of Jehovah….
“… Those who had recently rededicated themselves to the Lord at the altar set up before the ruins of His temple, realized that the line of de- marcation between His people, and the world is ever to be kept un- mistakably distinct. They refused to enter into alliance with those who, though familiar with the requirements of God’s law, would not yield to its claims…. Never can we afford to compromise principle by entering to alliance with those who do not fear Him….

7. What warning of inspiration is appropriate for us today in regard the lines of demarcation?
1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ex- amples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
“It is not the open and avowed enemies of the cause of God that are most to be feared. Those who, like the adversaries of Judah and Ben- jamin, come with smooth words and fair speeches, apparently seeking for friendly alliance with God’s children, have greater power to deceive. Against such every soul should be on the alert, lest some carefully con- cealed and masterly snare take him unaware.” –Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 570, 571.
“The Lord’s injunction, ‘Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers’ (2 Corinthians 6:14), refers not only to the marriage of Christians with the ungodly, but to all alliances in which the parties are brought into intimate association, and in which there is need of harmony in spirit and action.
